DEALING WITH BITTERNESS.
Neither give place to the devil...
“Let all bitterness, and wrath, and anger, and clamour, and evil speaking, be put away from you, with all malice: And be ye kind one to another, tenderhearted, forgiving one another, even as God for Christ's sake hath forgiven you.” Ephesians 4:31-32 KJV
Q: Have you ever known someone who was bitter?
Q: Do you know someone bitter towards God?
Q: Do have bitterness towards anyone?
You can be bitter at a parent, bitter towards a child, bitter towards a church member, bitter at your boss; this world is full of bitterness. People Are so easily offended today and the result is bitterness. It is a dangerous thing, bitterness can destroy. Small things can creep into our lives and cause us to get upset over the situation. It is like a thorn feasting under the skin. Dig it out and let God heal you.
Q: What is bitterness? A: Perceived sin.
Q: What makes you bitter? A: When we think someone has sinned against us.
Someone has done us wrong…
That's when we harbor resentment, and that turns into bitterness. We wait for an apology and when it does not come, we can get bitter. When we were in the world we got bitter, what about now that you are a Christian? Are you still getting bitter? It is time that we pray that God will help you get rid of that junk.
You can forgive someone even if they don't say sorry.
5 CHARACTERISTICS OF BITTERNESS:
1- Bitterness remembers details.
We remember the little things and can't shake what happened in the past. Every word, the tone, the place, the event, the time, you remember it all. You have reviewed it over and over.
Your day starts with "Good morning Mr. Bitterness."
Stop playing that song over and over and over again.
2- Bitterness brings obsession.
It's everywhere you look. It becomes part of your life. You become obsessed with all the details of the thing that happened. Sometimes some parts become exaggerated.
Stop talking about it.
3- Bitterness will drag you down.
Harboring bitterness will drag down your spiritual life, and physical life. You will get to church and not feel like praising God. You instead will sit and think about what that person did to you.
It might be time to be a fruit inspector. Inspect the fruit that you are bearing. What fruit of the spirit are you not showing. Or.... Are you showing the works of the flesh?
Stop acting like you have been sinned against.
4- Bitterness is most likely towards those closest to you.
You wife, husband, friends, relatives, co workers, those that are near you. It most often happens in your own family. If you are not careful you can become bitter. It is seldom towards those that are outside our contact zone. You need to pray every day and tell the devil to leave you alone.
Stop giving place to the devil.
5- Bitterness can be over a small thing.
When a small thorn gets under your skin it can be a big problem if you don't deal with it.
A little bit of garbage can stink up the entire house. Stepping on a little Lego, bear-foot, can cause great pain. Stubbing your toe can take you out. Take out the trash. Watch where you are going. Dig out the thorn.
Stop focusing on the event that caused the bitterness.
Have you ever been bitter towards someone?
Are you still bitter now?
Take some time to pray and ask God to show you where bitterness has crept into your hear and ask him to clean your heart and replace it with love.
